...Horrible Idea is a Punk’ish band from Atlanta... or is that Post-Punk? Maybe they should be described as Post-Post-Punk in that their music is generally played in fast and irregular tempos, but with an epic metal sound, and ska riffs thrown in for good measure. Propagandhi, Lagwagon, NoFx, Streetlight Manifesto, Thrice, Mastodon, In Flames, Stratovarius, Children of Bodom, and the like are enormous influences on the band’s sound. Verse-chorus, verse-bridge-chorus songs are no longer the norm in the band’s songwriting.

Their shows are always played with intensity, charisma, and maximum silliness, no matter if there's one person at the venue, or 300. Horrible Idea would play their hearts out to a cement wall because they love to play music. They are not rock stars, but a group of people who love to play music together and share that love with others.

Through the years (2005-Present), many shows, tours, and some lineup changes; Horrible Idea continues to play shows and write new material. By 2010, their abilities have grown, and the band’s sound has expanded and changed; becoming more experimental and epic. They have always been interested in creating fast, powerful, and triumphant aspects in their music, and they are coming close to perfecting that sound in their upcoming album

Horrible Idea’s upcoming 2010 album is going swimmingly, with 15 songs close to finished, and several more in the works. Rob and Dan from Wizkid Sound Studios have been invaluable throughout the recording process. They have acted as producers, technicians, babysitters (for band members, not actual babies), psychologists, and anything else the band has required throughout the year long spectacle of their album-making. The Wizkids have helped Horrible Idea reach new levels of musicality, and the new album is going to be incredible because of this team.

The band plans to spread their music, play amazing hilarious shows, and continues to work hard to get their music heard in Atlanta, Athens, and the entire known Universe. They will create and play music until their hands become too crippled with arthritis to hold an instrument.

Drawing from experiences in life, literature, and imagination; Horrible Idea’s lyrics vary from seething political rant, to songs about mushroom trips. A mix of punk, ska, metal, and miscellaneous influences from each of the band members hopefully ensures that the band's music will never dull. Pair that with their drive to constantly improve as musicians and songwriters, and hopefully they’ve got a winning combination. Of course, there are no winners or losers when it comes to making art, as long as you're passionate about it. Horrible Idea has passion in truckloads. Perhaps boatloads. No.... Uber-Passion.

We just got back from the Dead Rabbits show at the Highland Ballroom. The show was fantastic including the Birmingham, Alabama opener, The Dirty Lungs.  We'll have pics and videos of both bands posted soon...so check back. We'll check you later.

Capibara

I had wanted to see Capibara for sometime. I was lucky enough to review their album Wildcat a while back and I've been a fan ever since. You can read the review here. Needless to say that Capibara rocked it with their exploding melodies and wicked vocals. Capibara is raw and unrestricted with a style all their own and thier performance was the same.

Our next house show will be Friday, September 17th. We will be announcing the lineup very soon.

Thank you so much to the Moon and Pluto for putting on the festival and letting us be a part of it. We had a great time and saw some amazing music. Ok, so after some technical and lost battery charger issues we finally managed to get all of our Strange Days videos uploaded. So we have these and we'll be rolling out some from The Bloodplums, Sealions, The K-Macks and Romeo Spike in the next couple days.

Here are a couple never before seen videos we got of Efren at the Strange Days Music and Arts Festival a couple weeks back. Efren plays a dark folky sound with tons of self-analyzation and veiled metaphors. He made a fan out of me for sure.

Efren is  Scott and friend...usually Jonny, Darrin, and Jamie.

Review of their new album Spacehawk...

First, I want to nominate Fishhawk, and specifically track number three from this album, Blackout Reign, to be the next Bond movie theme song. From there you can sorta of see where this album and Fishhawk are coming from.  Fishhawk and more specifically Spacehawk literally has it all….funk, grime, prophecy, groove, love, and of course…space.  The album immediately kicks off with a robotic voice no doubt telling us of some great event or happening to come. From there the listener is hit with First Transmission, a Radiohead-esque meditational song that I'm sure came from another planet all together. The lyrics are a saga of metaphorical ecstasy followed with acoustic guitar and a real spaced out melody. 
 

Blackout Reign is the next track and by far my favorite…it reminds me of a Bond movie intro in that it has an epic feel with this sort of noir feeling to it. It definitely belongs on a soundtrack to an epic crime drama. Minutes Against Time deviates from the mystifying feeling of the first two tracks and adds a more disco dance feel. The vocal styling remains in the same arena but he speeds it up to match the meteoric beat. Prying into the Sun's Life is another one of my favorites. It's an introspective song that plays on emotions and fears of the subject...."Prying into the sun's life, prying into the sun…its hotter than hell, hotter than hell. Its hotter than hell." 

Spacehawk is truly a journey into the futuristic mindsets of three amazingly talented musicians. The album could be considered conceptual as each track carries the feeling to the next. This album would make a great companion to any dark dance floor, strobe lights flashing, sweat beads flying. I also found it to be quite good driving music.

I've seen Cinetrope a few times now and each time is better than the last. We had the pleasure of asking them a few questions at the Strange Days Music and Arts Festival 2010....

Cinetrope, as said in the interview, play what they called dream pop; I would agree with their affirmation. Sharron has a really beautiful voice that truly does add a real dream effect to the sounds. The band plays iced down dance pop often with what I would call tropical elements sprinkled throughout. A lot of it is pretty chill but I could definitely go to more of their shows and suggest you make it out. They are a great live band and when they're not being chill they're laying down grooves that can get a crowd moving.  Here is a video from Strange Days and a few questions we didn't get on camera....

B: What are some of your goals as a band?

The dream we be to just make a living out of it. We don't want to be rock stars but the idea of being a go to band for soundtracks would be wonderful. A tour of Europe would be ideal as we think we would have a pretty good reception to our sound over there.


B: Describe a Cinetrope show? What experience above all others do you hope fans take away from the show? 

A Cinetrope show is usually pretty silly as none of us take ourselves too seriously. We encourage the crowd to dance and have fun and to hopefully sing along if they know any of the words. We hope to begin incorporating the visuals on screen as we did for the release show in the future.
If our fans take anything home with them we hope it would be them humming one of our songs. We hope they will have a movie play out in their heads when they listen to us. We would like it to stick to them like gum and they will want to listen to it again and again.

B: Tell us about your writing process.

A typical Cinetrope writing session consists anything ranging from a guitar riff that gets developed  with  the rest of the band  or just a small jam session where a melody gets developed on top of it. The mood of the music typically determines where the lyrics will take us. 


B: What local bands would you recommend to your fans and fans of local music?

If you are into progressive rock influenced by King Crimson you would like the new Nerd Parade.  Sorry No Ferrari are a very cool instrumental band. Can Can is a great high energy live show and of course our friends Feeding Fingers are wonderfully brooding.

B: How do you advertise your shows?

Mostly online through our many sites or Facebook invitations, we have even used our fan sign up and sent them an Evite about our shows. We are going to try beatlanta for the next show. ;)
 

B: Any closing statements or thoughts?

We'd just like to say we hope to catch you at a show this summer and that you might even like us enough to take home a cd or even think to download us. We plan on unveiling many new songs this summer and will strive to make you love us or at least like us a little bit.
