Hard Rock Ambassadors of Rock Battle of the Bands
|
Hard Rock Ambassadors of Rock Battle of the BandsROCK 100.5 and Hard Rock Café share a passion not only for living everything rock but also for supporting and furthering great local music. Atlanta is one of the nation’s hottest local music scenes and we are determined to show the world exactly how much Atlanta music kicks ass. Not only are we going to send one lucky band to London to share a stage with Bruce Springsteen and Dave Mathews Band but we’re also going to give away separate trip to a rock fan just for being cool enough to listen to ROCK 100.5.

The Disregardables CD release show: Fox Trotsky, The Disregardables, Latin for Truth, and Turbo Slaughter!
Check out our videos of Alabama band Latin for Truth at our youtube station: youtube/beatlanta.com.
HATS OFF TO THE DISREGARDABLES (kickball champions :)- Too Ska for Hardcore and too Hardcore for Ska...but see the Disregardables when you can (tour details below)...beatlanta caught up with them at their show at Wonderroot this past Friday and we must say they are probably one of our favorite shows to date. Their too ska...quote at the beginning of this story really does put it into perspective. Catch their opener right here...
Check out more videos by The Disgregardables at beatlanta's youtube channel. The Disregardables is a 9 piece band including a keyboardist and two horn players (9 also includes their bus driver - who we must say is quite an entertaining dude -thus including him). They are James on vocals; Mark and Chex on Guitar; Chase on bass; Jordan on drums; Matt on keyboard and synth; Rew and Johny on the horns and Jack behind the wheel. The Disregardables formed about 3 years ago, with a 6 month break and now are at it again and going strong. Let the horns play...and so they shall...the face of Atlanta ska core is The Disregardables. With just the right formula of ska and hardcore these guys really rock. The horns add just what the sound needs to complete their ska roots and James fucking bellows out the hardcore vocals mixing in just what the ska kids want to hear...We managed to ask them a few questions at the show...
beatlanta - Do you find it easy to get noticed in Atlanta?
The Disregardables - The first two years we were together Atlanta hated us and we found it easier to play shows on the road...but now Atlanta is awesome. (we couldn't agree more...Atlanta is getting ready to blow up...there are some awesome bands out there right now and we want to be there to let you now about all of them).
The Disregardables Live at Wonderroot
beatlanta - Is this your first CD (for the Cd release party at Wonderroot)?
The Disregardables - We have two cds out. The new one is Exit Strategy, and our first ep recorded 2 years ago named Pissing people off isn't so bad. (Visit The Disregardables myspace page to buy their cds and merch).
beatlanta - How do you feel about the future of the music industry?
The Disregardables - It is probably fucked. Labels are going under, The big corporate bought venues are shutting down every day. Though it does not really concern us we doing everything ourselves with the help of close friends! (beatlanta couldn't agree more - see our blogs and look for news on the industry in general and please join our fight for a revolution of notice in local music. The power and money has always belonged in the hands of the artist. The means of production no longer belongs solely to major labels - because of the internet artists and bands can now be more independent than ever. INDEPENDENT AND ONLINE IS THE FUTURE - and the major labels are failing to keep up).
The Disregardables
beatlanta - How do you feel about file sharing? Do you feel its detrimental to the industry or do you find it a good thing - to help more people hear more music?
The Disregardables - I think it is rad and helps small bands like us get noticed. (once again - beatlanta couldn't agree more - see our blog about the future of free and also our coverage of the RIAA's ridiculous fight against music fans to keep them from file sharing - they rather sue and alienate the fans of their artists then come up with fresh and creative ideas to use technology rather than fight it).
beatlanta - How do you guys advertise your shows?
The Disregardables - We still flyer everywhere, do tons of web promoting, and word of mouth kids telling other kids!
beatlanta - You guys live with fellow Atl band Turbo Slaughter, correct?
The Disregardables - Yeah there lead singer sleeps on our couch!
beatlanta - What other Atlanta bands would ya'll recommend to your fans and fans of Atl music?
The Disregardables - The Wild, Fox Trotsky, Turbo Slaughter, Wrister, and 50:50 split.
beatlanta - What bands do ya'll listen to (non Atl)?
The Disregardables - To many to name; we listen to a wide array of music from Hardcore to indie to pop-punk and of course ska.
beatlanta - What places have you toured? What towns? Whats your favorite venue to play in Atl and whats your favorite town besides Atl you've played so far?
The Disregardables - We have been up the east several times and out west to texas once. We love the Diy (do it yourself) show scene in Atlanta like wonderroot, and all the house shows.
Well thats the interview for now. We kept it at that for now as we are sure to learn a lot more about The Disregardables in the coming months and years. Hardcore fans - check them out. Ska fans - check them out. No matter what your fancy believe us when we say that you'll fucking love these guys. Check out their upcoming tour...

Switch it up...Fox Trotsky...
Fox Trotsky Live at WonderrootFox Trotsky did it again. We saw their show this past Friday March 27th and it was a blast. After recently losing a guitarist and still contemplating whether to replace him or move on without the position being filled...we gotta say this: Sorry Charlie but these guys were awesome without you. You won't be able to tell the difference; well, you can, they got one less guitar; but it definitely didn't dull the performance and these guys are still going strong. It was an awesome show guys. Next time we advertise a Fox Trotsky show we want to see you all there. SUPPORT LOCAL MUSIC - and it doesn't get better than this. Fox Trotsky has been at it a while and you can definitely tell in their shows. These are no amateurs. Check out a song from the show...they had some problems with their bass but it still rocks...
We got more pics of Fox Trotsky added to their gallery in our "more pics" section from their show at Wonderroot this past Friday. Check em out...and check back soon for more on that show with The Disregardables - who we also have pics of in the "more pics" section. Check those out too.

We thought ya'll would wanna know about his new website that is in development that is going to be pretty amazing as far as helping bands and artists out. The site is called bandize and its still in development but it is going to be a one stop shop for bands and artists to manage themselves, their tours and even have an inventory tool to help keep track of merchandise and other shit. Check out the story at wired.com about the site and the guys who created it by clicking here....and stay tuned for beatlanta's "resources" and "bands" sections coming soon. The resources section will include interviews with industry professionals and links and articles on resources that could seriously help you get your stuff out there. Thanks everyone...check back often.
SXSW COVERAGE: Get your up to date coverage of SXSW 2009 here at Wired.com.
We caught Black Preacher and El Fossil live at 529 Thursday March 19th.
We managed to get up with Aaron and his new fiance and band mate Kate (cool fuckin people) of El Fossil at their show/engagement party this past Thursday at 529 to ask them a few questions. El Fossil is about a year old and is Aaron on Guitar; Thirty Cent (who got is name when he caught a stray bullet in the leg - yes its true) on Bass; Kate on Drums and Kenny on Guitar as well. Aaron and Kenny have been playing guitar now for eleven years. The band met each other just while hanging around town and making friends and networking. I asked Aaron and Kate what they thought of the Atlanta music scene in general. They said they like it a lot and loved how hard bands and artists in the scene work to get their stuff out there. He did agree with the recent creative loafing article though and said that a lot of the time a band from Atlanta will have to tour in other cities to truly get their stuff heard and build a large fanbase...and also added that he thinks "too many people are just looking for a fashion show and trying to show of their scenester good looks rather than actually support the scene"...andbeatlanta couldn't agree more...hence us starting this site. we're here at
El Fossil
Some might remember El Fossil from back in the day when they ran the Crackhouse. A house where many shows were played until the cops got annoyed (fuckers). Now adays you can find them playing venues around Atlanta such as Wonderroot and 529 (can anyone find us a good link to 529 - email it beatlanta@gmail.com). They like to tour to surrounding areas as well. They said they don't like to play too many shows because they don't want to over do it intown so you gotta catch them the next time you have a chance...and be prepared to move. Check 'em out below...
Kate of El Fossil on drums
When asked what Atlanta bands they wanted us to check out they had a lot to name; Hawks, Club of Rome King Congregation and Devil Worshipper were just a few. These guys seem pretty ingrained in the Atlanta scene. They use mostly word of mouth and rely on their friends and fans in other bands to get the news out there about their shows and music. They themselves listen to everything from Smoky Robinson to Jimi Hendrix and they named off quite a bit of rap music as well. I asked them if they would be willing to play shows with rappers and they said yes; so be looking for that - we're gonna try to set that shit up....and mix it up a little. El Fossil describes themself as Surf Rock, Metal and Thrash...yup.
Check out more El Fossil pics at our more pics section here...
Black Preacher Live at 529
Who or what the hell is Black Preacher? We managed to catch the show at 529 last Thursday March 19th and were weirdly surprised. The opening act was a new Atlanta performer calling himself Black Preacher. All night I noticed what appeared to be a white man who had painted himself black; I thought what the fuck is that dude doing? Well, then I found out. He was indeed the Black Preacher and I must say while I was set back for a second pondering what was going on, he begin to bellow out some screeching screams that really got the crowd pumped up. He was an amazing crowd pleasing opening act. BANDS AND ARTISTS...if you want an opening act that is going to get people talking and get fans rlled up for your show then Black Preacher is the man for the job.
Preach on dude
I know some will disagree as his sound is quite different and experimental but thats the kind of shit you gotta love about underground music. He is loud, energetic and upbeat and he'll get your crowd going. Hey Black Preacher, get a hold of us so we can finish that interview...
Check him out here...vidoe isn't much but you can hear him for sure...
Check out more Black Preacher and other bands at beatlanta's youtube channel.

FREE WILL BE FREE
Ya'll should definitely read this story by the editor of wired.com about his upcoming book on the economics of giving stuff away for free. The part that directly relates to what ya'll might be up to is his section on giving away or letting people pirate your music. He goes on to explain that while you may not make money from album sales, giving away your music for free is going to get you more fans at a faster rate. You can then use that fame to build a model for making money from those folks that are your fans. It you give away 1000 cds then thats a 1000 people that have heard your music and a certain percentage of those people are going to come to your shows. You then make a lot more money at your shows to offset giving your album away for free. He also mentions the fact that the internet has basically made the cost of distributing that material at almost zero. So you're giving away something for free that cost you nothing but your time in the first place; why should people pay for something that was free to give away. I like this because it directly relates to one of our causes here at beatlanta; which is fighting the RIAA on their stupid and ridiculous efforts to fight piracy of music. Their is no way to fight it. They need fresh and creative ideas to make more money, not ideas that isolate the fan base. Anyway, read the story here. You'll be able to get his book for free when it comes out and I think its definitely worth a look. Read below for more on the RIAA's efforts to combat music piracy and stay tuned for more news on the subject.

Check out the post section under "advertise your shows here." A rep from Atlanta based Boomboxmuzic wrote a little about the company and its background. If you're a band or solo artist it is definitely something that might help you out in your journey of getting your music out there. Check it out.
Ya'll please check out the "posts" section of our site and utilize it. Do it!
Check out The Long Shadows last week Live at East Atlanta Icehouce. Stay tuned for more on The Long Shadows and more on that show below.
-video by Chris Fuller
We caught up with Atlanta veterans Fox Trotsky this past Sunday March 8th at East Atlanta Icehouse. They played with fellow Atlanta bands The Long Shadows and Attractive Eighties Women and Virginia band Botox Party.
Gus of Fox Trotsky
Fox Trotsky is Conor (vocals/guitar), Mason (vocals/base), Charlie (guitar) and Gus (drums - the latter 3 are also in Atlanta band North Trolls). Fox Trotsky has been stompin around Atlanta for some time now and every time we catch them its always a good time. Over the years they have developed a sound fan base of dead loyal fans that always add to the vibe of their shows...so ya'll should definitely see them when you have the chance. Their next show is at Wonderroot. We'll have more on Fox Trotsky in the coming weeks but check out a couple of their performances from the show last Sunday...
Check out more Fox Trotsky performances here
Check out more photos of Fox Trotsky at our more pics page.

Industry News - It seems that piracy is in the news a lot lately. The film and music industries are starting to take a bigger notice on the amount of illegal downloading going on around the world. The U.K. and France are leading the way in reform to try and curtail the amount of downloading that goes on and now there is a push in Canada to pass similar reform laws. The music biz folks in Canada are worried because out of their top selling acts only two are actually Canadian nationals...and shitty ones at that, in our opinion. But anyway, this is major news. As the music biz continues to try and catch up with all the technology floating around they keep putting out these half assed, half thought out ideas such as suing college kids to try to fight, rather than use to their advantage, the technology age. They would rather risk alienating their fans and customers then to come up with some cool and fresh ideas on how to get fans more involved with the bands and artists and the music they produce. This is pathetic and I believe it will be their downfall. Their latest scheme is to hook up with internet providers (find more stories on this below) and work to get your service cut off if you continue to download "illegal" files...and if you live on a college campus it will be even easier for them. With this rationale they would have to come up with ways to punish your friend for giving you a cd he recorded for you. During the on going trial of Pirate Bay one major music biz professional actually stated, under oath, that he truly believes that if file sharing services were not available that people would have actually bought the music they downloaded; he therefore considers every album downloaded as lost income. This is the same stupid men that are coming up with great ideas like suing college kids. What they need is a push for innovation and creativity. Artists can no longer rely on the norm for getting signed and being this big rich rock star. The biz and the artists will need to work together to create new and awesome ideas on getting fans involved and having fun. It starts at the local level. It is time for a new era in music. One where bands create a strong local and regional fan base that they rely on to get the word out. You can't download a live performance. The future in major money making artists is on the road and with creative marketing; and maybe cheaper cds. Major music stores such as Tower Records are out of business because they were too slow to act on the technology age. We are calling for a renewed interest in local music. Fans flock to sports arenas and theatre events in their town but seem to lack the same interest in their local bands and artists. This is because for decades the major music groups have dominated the ability to market. They held the sole means of production...but they do not any more and they are shaking in their boots as each year their profit continues to decline. The internet has revolutionized the independent scene. Will the music biz ever catch on? There are some signs but they are slow coming and they are not enough. Stay tuned for more...
Superfly productions, the masterminds behind festivals such as Bonnaroo and Outside Lands is looking for new investors so they can take their company "to the next level." Being an avid supporter of Bonnaroo (this year will be my fourth) I will be watching this closely to see what comes out of it. It could be some pretty exciting stuff. Stay tuned for news on that.
Radiohead was recently in the U.K. speaking out against prosecuting people for downloading "illegal" music saying why would you prosecute your fans and customers (and they're working on new material).
INDUSTRY NEWS - check out this story from billboard.com that says the U.K. has warned the music industry that they are prepared to take drastic measures to combat their out of control piracy levels unless the music biz figures out a way to stop it...the U.S. could be next. Click here to read the story.

Hey! Whenever ya'll are on youtube check out beatlanta's station at youtube.com/beatlanta. It will soon include many videos from many different bands; and not just Atlanta bands. We're gonna use that channel for videos for bands from the shows we go to no matter where they're from.
You're not going to want to miss Sorry no Ferrari the next time you have the chance. Many of you have probably heard them but for those who haven't (and this was my first time hearing them live) you're in for a treat. This is the opening song of their set this past Friday March 6th. I was blown away. The song went on for more than twelve minutes (yes, 12 minutes); I caught the whole thing but due to technical bull shit I was only able to upload almost 8 minutes...but its still fucking awesome. Check it out...
Well here ya go; live at Wonderroot the North Trolls
Ya'll check out KidFireDanger at live at Wonderroot.

RIAA TO WORK WITH INTERNET PROVIDERS
WARNING! The RIAA is in talks with internet providers, especially those that provide to college campuses, to get the providers to share the information we are all downloading. If they find out that you have downloaded pirated material they will warn you, maybe fine you and possibly work with the provider to have your interntet service cut off. This is after the RIAA sued more than 35,000 people for downloading illegal files; a program that failed miserably as it did nothing to halt the loads of pirated material downloaded everyday. Click here to read a little more on the story. You're gonna want to watch this one closely. I don't know the nitty gritts of it all but it sounds like a serious invasion of privacy - as they will have access to everything you download (porn freaks beware).
PIRATE BAY TRIAL
We've been watching this one closely. Its the trial of The Pirate Bay owners, the largest bit torrent sharing site in the world. This is imporant because it could be a landmark case in deciding the future of online downloads when it comes to file sharing. If these guys are convicted it will back the case of that the RIAA is making in order for internet providers to share what we are downloading - and if you're downloading pirated material they will be able to shut off your internet service. Check out the beginning of the trial
here.
Ya'll check out "free music Fridays" from Wired.com. Free music Fridays are where they offer a selection of different songs, usually around some sort of theme, for you to download for free. This past Friday's theme was songs that should have been on the soundtrack for mega move "The Watchmen." It includes a track from Atlanta's own Black Lips tilted "Short Fuze" which makes references to exploding bombs and violence and other attracting shit. Its from their recently released album 200 Million Thousand. Click here to check out the story and download your free Black Lips song. And stay tuned to beatlanta for more coverage on one of Atlanta's most famous break out bands the Black Lips.

Star Bar Friday March 6th
Batata Doce
Blair Crimmins and the Hookers
Sorry no Ferrari
This Piano Plays Itself
Tous les Jours with DJ Press Play
THIS PIANO PLAYS ITSELF (tppi) - we saw the recent tppi show this past Friday at the Star Bar. It was an awesome show. We've known these guys since they formed in '07 and they have come a long way. You definately want to check these guys out. Tppi consists of band members Eric B (Vocals/Guitars), Jayson N (guitar/keyboard/trumpet), Justin N (drums) and their newest member Michael S (bass/synthesizer). Michael recently replaced former bassist and high school friend of the band Michael G, who left the band because of differences in where the band wanted to go and do with their music. It certaintly didn't affect the band's music as they are still pumpin out new songs and playing more shows as they continue to grow their fanbase. Beatlanta is an avid supporter of this band. These are some cool dudes who make cool music...and there sound continues to get better everytime I see their live show.
tppi at the Star Bar March 6th - gotta love those legs
You can catch up with tppi on their myspace page and of course right here on beatlanta.com. Friday's show was awesome. They set up and left stage and came out wearing these short shorts...a little sense of humor can go a long way with bands. It really got the crowd's attention and shows that these guys don't take themselves too seriously, which can be a turn off for a lot of fans. We love bands that show they just want to have fun and want their fans to enjoy themselves. Their shows are fun.
Sorry guys but we gotta give Michael here the award for nicest legs, mostly because he showed the most :)- These guys play all sorts of songs but I don't think I'm alone when I say I like them most when they bring the noise. Their faster songs are their best in that you will often pick up on a little psychedelia (I've heard it described as space rock) in their tunes that leaves you begging for more lying somewhere between Bloc Party, the Deftones and Death Cab. When these guys pick up the tempo it really sounds great. This was my first time seeing them in a while and since they put out some new songs and I gotta say their new stuff is pretty rockin...their a little faster paced. Come see these guys and bring your dancin shoes because they will make you move. They have one self titled album out right now that they cut last year. These guys have a tour coming up with Athens band Kebert Xela, who you can find them playing with quite often. Their upcoming shows our found below.

I really love Justin Newton on drums. The drums are done really well with these guys and Justin is amazing. Go check him out. Their tour plans are below and they are looking for help with finding venues, a cheap and hopefully free place to stay and any help you can offer. If you can help with any of those things in any of these cities then please send an email to beatlanta@gmail.com and let us know what you might be able to help them out with.

Eric and Jayson on Guitar
tppi self titled, self produced debut album
For a debut album this one is really great. I was able to help them out when they were getting this together and it was a lof of fun; seeing these guys practice and being there when they put their self made album stickers on the albums and into little sleeves was great. I even have an original mp3 copy on my computer right now. It was a proud moment for these guys and I was glad to be a part of it. I am really looking forward to their next album. Here's a blog from taken from their myspace last year before they put out their album:
Well.
we have been doing a lot.
we got some pictures taken last week.
we re-tracked all the instruments for the record.
ALL of them.
including the songs we already have up.
i have learned a thing or 4356456 about recording since those original things, so we redid everything.
welcome clarity.
plus we tracked 3 new songs.
so. we’re planning on releasing a 7 song thing.
We’re shooting for a release date of april 11.
its been a long time coming, but we (i) need to be completly happy with everything before it is released.
A new song will probably be posted in a couple weeks.
we’re also planning on making a short film with some of the music.
this probably won’t happen until the summer, when our brains can be used for our own good.
and not for papers or exams or any of that mess.
i am so incredibly sick of school.
ahhhhhhhhh
-eric
The guys go to GSU and practice regularly...must be some busy dudes. Eric does the bulk of the producin, mixin, recording stuff and is quite talented. Last time I checked in with him he was looking to make that a regular part of his music career so be looking for more stuff produced by him.
Anyway, GO CHECK THESE GUYS OUT. We'll be paying close attention to them as well. Find more pics of tppi on our "more pics" page...and check the more pics page often as we grow our photo gallery of tppi and other Atlanta bands. And bands; answer the email request at the top of this page and you'll have a spot on beatlanta.com as well. We want to document every Atlanta band we can, of any genre.

The Failure's Union, Cheap Girls, the North Trolls and KidFireDanger
CHECK OUT THE NORTH TROLLS !!! The North Trolls were formed in December 2007 when guitarist Mike Morgan (of Dude City Dj's and Dude City Productions - look for their stuff) taught long time friend Gus Fernandez (of Fox Trotsky), drummer and vocals, 3 guitar chords. Gus took that knowledge and wrote what he describes as 7 "catchy, fun and dancy songs." Their recent facebook ad read "be sure to dress nice, and also appropriately to dance." Gus went on to explain that he wants people to dance and have fun and acknowledged that because of the simplicity of the songs they come from a sort of folky, but dancy influence. He said because of the few chords used its easy for songs to sound folky. I got that myself but they come through as more of a punk/folk dancy band, with rapid paced short songs. "We also like to play one cover a night" says Gus. A couple of us from beatlanta were thouroughly impressed. It was my first time seeing them, allthought I've known the guys for a couple years now, and I really enjoyed myself. Also consisting of long time friends Mason and Charlie (both of Fox Trotsky); Mason plays bass and Charlie Guitar. The guys all share vocals.

KidFireDanger at Wonderroot this past Tuesday March 3rd
We caught up with Atlanta band KidFireDanger for their 2nd show ever this past Tuesday when they opened up for Michigan bands The Failure's Union and Cheap Girls and Atlanta band The North Trolls at Wonderroot, and were blown away. KidFireDanger is gonna be one to watch. For a recently formed band and their second live show ever these guys sound awesome. This can be expected since they consist of members and High School pals (since they were freshmen) Cayce (drums) and Will (vocals/guitar - also of local band The Long Shadows) and the newly found James (bass - of local band NEC), who they picked up simply because they needed a bassist and knew he was good. When I asked the guys if they watch the music industry and where its headed the only one worried about it was Cayce (beatlanta.com is soon to be your source for everything key in music industry news). Cayce attends the Art Institute and is planning on being in the professional music industry; he is studying to be an Audio Engineer. When asked if he planned on producing in the future he answered somewhere along the lines of yeah.
Vocals/Guitar Will
Influences were thrown around and the likes of The Lightning Bolts, radio pop, noisy weirdo artsy shit and jazz were envoked. KidFireDanger recommend local bands Its Elephants and of course NEC (record release this Saturday at Vacation Gallery) and The Long Shadows. You can find these guys and their shows advertised on myspace and facebook and rest assured beatlanta will be watching these dudes very closely...their fucking awesome.
